What does “modular” mean in bioprocess equipment and why does it matter?

When we talk about modular equipment in bioprocessing, we refer to systems designed by independent functional blocks that can be easily added, modified or replaced without redesigning the complete equipment.

In the context of bioreactors, fermentors or downstream systems, this has key implications for flexibility, scalability and operating efficiency.

What does a modular system include?

A modular bioprocess equipment can incorporate:

  • Control modules (pH, DO, temperature, foam, agitation…)
  • Feed modules (pumps for nutrients, defoamers, bases or acids)
  • Filtration, extraction or drying systems to be added as external blocks
  • Remote monitoring interfaces or SCADA integration
  • Customizable accessories such as ports, probes or specific valves

Why does it matter if a device is modular?

  • Flexibility to grow:

You can start with a basic system and add functionality as your process requires it. Ideal for startups or R&D that scale gradually.

  • Cost savings:

You don’t need to buy everything from the beginning. You can invest only in the modules you need now and expand later.

  • Easy maintenance:

If a module fails, you can replace it without shutting down the entire system or disassembling the entire equipment.

  • Customization according to the process:

Each bioprocess has unique requirements. Modularity allows to adapt the equipment to the specific culture, operation strategy (batch, fed-batch, continuous) and product requirements.

  • More efficient scaling:

By having a modular architecture, scaling from laboratory to pilot or industrial is simpler and more predictable. Only each module is replicated and adapted.

At TECHMI Group we design modular systems because…

We know that biotechnology is dynamic, and that your processes evolve. That’s why our fermenters and bioreactors can easily adapt to:

  • New formulations or microbial strains
  • Stricter regulatory requirements
  • Changes in the business model (production of bioinputs, biocosmetics, enzymes, etc.)

Our control, power and remote monitoring modules allow you to always have the equipment you need, without oversizing it from the beginning.

💬 Does your current equipment limit you?

Maybe it’s time to move to a modular system. We help you redesign your production strategy with technology that grows with you.
